What is World Listening Day?

World Listening Day is an international event encouraging you to listen to the world around you and hear and share the amazing diversity of sounds in your everyday life. It is held this year on Sunday July 18th, 2010.

What Can I do in My Area?

To celebrate World Listening Day, the University of Guelph research project Community Sound [e]Scapes is featuring recordings of the sounds of the local area made by local residents (like you). You don’t have to be technical whizz kid to get involved.

We are accepting (per person or group):

1 recording of 2 minutes length of sounds from the environment (no straight music tracks please)

PLUS

1 recording of up to 2 minutes recorded verbal description to accompany the sounds. (Descriptions can include info about the place you are recording, who you are or anything else you think is relevant.)

Sounds should be recorded at 12pm local time on Sunday July 18th 2010 on your own recording equipment. We will feature all recordings on the project website in the weeks following July 18th, 2010. http://soundescapes.improvcommunity.ca

You can record in your living room, local park or street corner, in your car or even on the bus. Use any equipment you can find, from audio recorders, to cell phones, iPods,voice recorders or even old tape players. Technical support is available, just ask!

How to Get Your Sounds to Us After July 18th

You must be pre-registered to take part and send in sounds (see above). Registered participants can get us their sounds by:

1. Using the simple online upload function on our website

GO TO: http://soundescapes.improvcommunity.ca

You must get an account on the website on the main page first, this takes 2 minutes. Once you are logged in, files can then be uploaded by clicking the World Listening Day tab on the site. On this page, go to “Upload”. Choose your sound file from your computer and press the green plus to upload. Please pre-name your files carefully as this name will appear on the website. Please make sure we can tell from the name which is sounds and which is your description.

2. Posting in or dropping in files (during business hours) to the project office. We can accept any format you have, if you would like your media returned to you, please include a self-addressed envelope.

FROM THE LATEST PRESS RELEASE FROM THE ORGANISERS OF WORLD LISTENING DAY

WORLD LISTENING DAY

You are invited to participate in the first World Listening Day, which happens on Sunday, July 18, 2010. The purposes of World Listening Day are:

· to celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around us, environmental awareness, and acoustic ecology;

· to raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, World Listening Project, and individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography;

· and to design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices.

World Listening Day is being organized by the World Listening Project, in partnership with the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology. July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement. The World Soundscape Project, which Schafer directed, is an important organization which has inspired a lot of activity in this field, and his book The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World helped to define many of the terms and background behind the acoustic ecology movement.


The World Listening Project invites you to participate in World Listening Day. Here are several possibilities—


· You can organize a soundwalk or a listening party when people play field recordings.

· You can organize a performance event that involves field recordings and other artistic expressions that explore our soundscape and how we can listen to our sonic environment.

· You can participate in a private / solitary way, by paying attention to your soundscape.

· You can facilitate an educational event that relates to acoustic ecology, field recordings, or a similar topic.

· You can contact organizations that are participating in World Listening Day, to see if you can get involved that way.
