Rebecca’s Updates April 21
We introduced the group to Audacity free sound editing software.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Some people are very familiar with the software and spent time editing te sounds they have collected, other people saw it for the first time and spent time learning its basic features. It was good to let people experiment with the software on their own. We also had the recorders on site and it was the first day I got to go out properly and record and it was delightful. I had missed being an artist while I was being a facilitator and a researcher, and being out on a lovely sunny afternoon with my recorder, headphones and mic, I suddenly felt euphoric. Nick and I explored the kitchens and the tables at the University restaurant the Bullring, http://www.uoguelph.ca/historicaltour/bullring.php
and we both recorded local celebrity, Bob the hotdog seller, as he sat in the sun, playing guitar and whistling. http://www.uoguelph.ca/atguelph/07-05-23/featuresbuns.shtml
This haunting sound is such a keynote sound for summer on this campus, and it carries and echoes and I followed it into corners and alleys between buildings, feeling for the first time relaxed and content that I was letting the sound lead me. As a group, we all seem so much more confident and relaxed. The membership changes, I am never sure who will be there weekly, or will appear on the forums online, but I think I have finally learnt to trust that people, including me, will get what they need from these sessions.
