Rebecca’s Update, March 24th, 2010
A smaller group today, I hope it is just midterms that kept some folks away. Poor Nick and Rosa had car problems, and we missed having them too. Emory Davis ran a crazy but fun session on recording bus sounds on campus. It was difficult as I found it abit hard to follow sometimes, but his energy was great, and it was fun being out at the University bus stop listening so intently. I learnt a lot about wind affecting recordings that day, such a windy spot, but I also spotted some sounds I might go back and record again when I am not so scattered watching the group. The University Centre, for instance, has fantastic doors that cut off conversations half way as people enter them talking, but sadly I didn’t manage to catch it properly, I think I need a different mike for that, mine was very directional. We then did some recording on the walk back, and then learnt how to get the sounds off the devices, onto a laptop, name them correctly and then upload them to the website.
I was worried about new people not having had any time with the recorders, and I know a few people didn’t understand the devices they were using, but following the feedback from the da Vinci project, I have to trust that playing with the devices is one of the best ways to get used to what they can do, I hope! I think when we do have technical experts in, the missing links on how to use the devices will be filled in for anyone who is playing catch up on using a recorder, and we will all learn more about microphones.
It is very weird being a participant, and observer and a group facilitator all at once, I hope I can still learn alongside people even as I am responsible for coordinating the group. I think I will have to spend some time recording on my own too. Looking so much forward to the workshops coming up!
